Melges 15s are escaping the winter freeze by heading down to Sarasota, Florida where the Sarasota Sailing Squadron is hosting the inaugural Melges 15 Winter Series. Sailors are enjoying exciting one-design racing amongst the mild 70°F temperatures, steady breeze, and beautiful scenery. This three-part winter series started on January 8-10th with a clinic and races.
The Melges 15 boat has enjoyed high interest and fast growth since its launch in 2020. The new Winter Series event is helping to gather and build the community behind the boat.
The series is attracting both Melges 15 owners and newcomers. Racers ranged from under 15 youth to masters, showing the wide appeal the boat has.
Attendees who had never sailed a Melges 15 before spoke highly of how easy the boat was to learn. As well as the boat’s smooth handling and fast race speeds.
Melges offered a handful of charter boats that could be rented for the events, giving those thinking about purchasing a Melges 15 the chance to try one out and race with a strong fleet. This was a very popular option since all rental boats were quickly completely booked.
The Melges 15 Winter Series has two more weekends—February 27-28th and March 26-28th. The second and third events currently have 30 and 25 boats registered, respectively. A perfect opportunity to take advantage of the incredible packable nature of the Melges 15 to head south to warmer waters with plenty of competition!
